El NYT tiene una página excelente sobre la crisis financiera, que despliega de forma gráfica, cómo ha ido afectando el desempleo de los Estados Unidos municipio a municipio. Me encantaría que hubiera algo parecido para México, y que además reuniera cifras de criminalidad.

El New York Times de hoy trae un artículo fantástico de un arquitecto que integró un elaborado y complicadisimo juego, en un departamento que estaba renovando sin decirle a los inquilinos. Las claves llevaron a la familia a descubrir paredes con fondos falsos, cerraduras secretas, y mensajes escritos por detrás de cuadros.
El New York Times en su edición del domingo trae un artículo sobre el turismo de aventura en México, el cual incluye a Potrero Chico en Nuevo León:
ROCK CLIMBING: EL POTRERO CHICO
About an hour northwest of Monterrey, a craggy limestone outcrop named El Potrero Chico has been quietly attracting rock climbers from around the world. What makes the area unusual is the sheer variety of the 600-plus bolted routes — in which permanent artificial anchors are embedded in the rock — all within easy access of a campground and lodge at the base of the rock.
The icing on the cake? You won’t have to share. The crowd typically tops out at 50 or 60 people, mostly a mix of Americans and Canadians and some Europeans; on many days, you’ll probably encounter just a handful of other climbers.

Es de esas cosas muy extrañas que nadie en Monterrey (la capital del estado) parece conocer, pero que es internacionalmente reconocido como un lugar excepcional para trepar – se le compara con España y el sur de Francia.
En un conteo informal calculamos que en esta temporada había por lo menos trescientas personas escalando, de las cuales menos del 20% eran mexicanos. Todo esto sin publicidad, señalamientos adecuados o estrategia turística aparente.

El New York Times tiene una sección gráfica muy interesante sobre las palabras que ha empleado Bush Deux en todos sus informes anuales a los estadounidenses a lo largo de siete años. Creo que este tipo de informes ilustrados son utilísimos, pues son la única forma como los individuos comunes y corrientes podemos contextualizar las montañas de información en bruto que generan nuestros gobiernos.

Otro ejemplo de información desplegada de una forma inteligente son las fotografías de Chris Jordan, un artista conceptual que presenta cifras y datos como pixeles en imágenes puntillistas.
Según el New York Times y la revista The New Yorker, el artista mexicano que más impacto ha tenido en las galerías neoyorkinas a principios del 2007 es Enrique Metinides, un fotógrafo de nota roja para el rotativo “La Prensa”. Parecería una nota de los santos inocentes pero no, las fotos se exhiben, y por lo que he visto, se merecen todo el aplauso que han recibido.

His appearances were frequent enough to attract the attention of mighty Lucasfilm, which chose not to sue Mr. Ross, but instead invited him to perform at Celebration III, the April 21-24 Indianapolis “Star Wars” convention that heralded the advent of the final film in the series, “Episode III – Revenge of the Sith.”
He has pitched to Lucasfilm the idea of compressing and staging the second trio of movies. But whether that happens or not, he doesn’t expect to play members of the Skywalker clan all his life. After Ian McKellen took in “One Man Lord of the Rings” one night, the two actors met for lunch and bandied about the virtues of solo vehicles. “We talked about his one-man shows, like ‘Acting Shakespeare,’ ” recalled Mr. Ross. “He said: ‘They’re in the bag. You can do them anytime.’ Except that this show will definitely have a shelf life, because my body will have a shelf life. It is the most punishing show I’ve ever done. I don’t want to be some 60-year-old guy coming out and. …” With that, he began to hum the “Stars Wars” theme.
En la mañana leí este magnífico artículo del New York Times, sobre la identidad del hombre dibujado en los blancos de tiro de la policía de Nueva York. Prueba de que hasta la historia más mundana puede ser interesante si se cuenta bien.

With my 10-month-old son, Emmett, in a back carrier, I stood on tiptoe at Central Park West and West 66th Street and watched the Thanksgiving Day Parade. Although not able to see much of the bands and clowns, we enjoyed the balloons and bigger floats.
When the building-size SpongeBob SquarePants balloon appeared, the crowd went wild. Everyone was cheering and clapping except for the man standing next to me. He was silent. Looking perplexed, he turned to me and asked, with a strong French accent, “Who is this famous and large cheese?”

En Apple Trailers acaban de subir el corto de la película Kinsey, sobre la vida de Alfred Kinsey, el controvertido biólogo y sociólogo accidental, que condujo las primeras investigaciones sobre el estado real de la sexualidad, en la década de los cincuentas. Se ve bastante buena.
